Frisbee - Durango Boot

Durango Boot is more popularly called Durango. It is a non-contact competitive sport which uses a Frisbee or flying disc. The game is very much similar to Ultimate Frisbee. The game got its name from the very first place where it was played – Durango, Colorado; ‘boot’ was added because the players used boots as field markers, hence the name Durango Boot.

Two teams play the game and they need 2 cones which are set very close together. Each team is usually composed of three players. The game starts by flipping the disc and the teams choose heads or tails; the winner will start their offense. One of the objectives of the players is to be able to get a position where they can knock-over the cone. If a certain player is not able to complete his or her throw (or when it has already reached stall count #6, there will be a turnover. The other team’s aim at this point will be to take the Frisbee to a zone called ‘take-back’ so that their opponent will not be able to make a score. The teams should be able to achieve 3 points in order to win. The series usually consists of three games.

At present, the rules of Durango Boot have variations but the original rules are still intact. Amendments were made and there are also some exceptions. Some of the rules are as follows:

1. Each team should only have one cone. Nalgene bottles are usually used in the game. In order to score, any of the players should be able to tip or knock-over the bottle or cone. You can do this by throwing the Frisbee to the bottle or cone, or by simply tipping it over while holding the disc.

2. Traveling calls are made for players who put down their hands attempting to knock-over the bottle or cone but the possession is still maintained.

3. The zone ‘take-back’ was replaced by the half-field line. The teams should be able to cross the line so that they can make a score. This line is marked by a boot or shoe.

4. Hammer throw can be executed by a player of a certain team wherein he or she will attempt to knock-over the cone on the other side of the field. The team will receive a bonus point is they are successful with the throw but if not, the Frisbee or disc will be given to the other team.

These are some of the rules of Durango Boot. If you want to be a good player of this game, you should know all the rules or regulations so that you will not commit any violation. By practicing regularly, you can surely develop the right moves so that you can easily knock-over the cone or bottle. Durango Boot is really quite popular especially in Colorado. Where the Name Frisbee Came From

A name tells a lot about a certain thing or individual. Even Frisbee has its own history and inventor. Because of the inventor, this exciting recreation became known all over the world. Oftentimes, the inventor or creator of a thing is the main focus of debates. You see, there are times when the origin of a certain thing is not known because of lack of evidence but in the case of Frisbee, its inventors were clearly identified.

The name ‘Frisbee’ got its name from Frisbie Baking Company. The company was located at Bridgeport Connecticut and they made excellent pies for the colleges found in New England. According to some sources, the students in the colleges played with the empty tins of the pies. It served as a form of game or sport for them and so they were the very first players of Frisbee.

Another source claimed that the name ‘Frisbee’ was derived from Elihu Frisbie who was an undergraduate student in Yale. Elihu used to fling tray collections from the chapel to the school grounds.

All these things happened in the 1820’s and ‘Frisbee’ was simply coined by the college students. Until now, Frisbee is still believed to have been derived from the pie company and the name of the undergrad student. Both the student and pie company are trying to claim the Frisbee’s origin.

Later on, the pie tins were replaced by plastic Frisbee versions which were designed by Warren Franscioni and Walter Frederick Morrison. The plastic Frisbees are far better than the pie tins because it can fly farther and more accurately. However, Franscioni and Morrison called it ‘Pluto-platter’ and it was a sure hit during their time since many people were quite interested in the UFOs. Since the basic design was saleable and hit the market by storm, it was patented and named ‘Morrison Slope’.

Morrison later on sold the design to Wham-O. This was another company which manufactured hula hoops. The production started in 1957. The sales were extraordinary but after several years, Pluto-platter’s sales slowed down. Wham-O wanted to restore the toy into the market and that was also the time when they found out about the story of the Frisbee. Wham-O borrowed the name and re-introduced Frisbee but this time, not as a toy but as a sport.

College students also called playing Frisbee as ‘frisbie-ing’ and now it is already called Ultimate Frisbee which is very much similar to football.

So, are you still wondering where the name ‘Frisbee’ came from? One can’t exactly tell where Frisbee came from but for now, all the individuals and companies mentioned earlier are all responsible for the creation of Frisbee. The recreation sport will not be popular in today’s times without their contributed efforts. To sum it all up, the name ‘Frisbee’ came from Frisbie Baking Company, Elihu Frisbie, the college students who played with the pie tins and coined the word ‘frisbei-ing’, Warren Franscioni, Walter Frederick Morrison, and Wham-O.

If one of them is missing, Frisbee wouldn’t be recognized as a recreational sport today. Thanks to these individuals and companies, people today can play a very exciting and fun sport like Frisbee. Purchase your Frisbee now and enjoy playing it with your family and friends. It is surely a fun way to keep your body fit and to use your extra energy.

Who Invented Frisbee?

Who invented Frisbee? Many inventions only have one or two inventors but in the case of Frisbee, there are many claims or stories behind its invention. Today’s Frisbee evolved from Frisbie Baking Company’s pie tins. Some say that college students in New England played with the empty pie tins by tossing and catching it. For a clearer history of Frisbee, here are some of the highlights.

1820 – There was an undergrad Yale student named Elihu Frisbie who played with tray collections by tossing them around the campus. According to some people, ‘Frisbee’ was coined from Elihu’s last name; the ‘ie’ of Frisbie was changed to ‘ee’ and became Frisbee. Although this was the most approved claim, it still met lots of protest.

1871-1958 – as mentioned earlier, Frisbee was also believed to have originated from Frisbie Baking Company. The name of this company was engraved on the pie tins they delivered to the campuses of New England. Frisbee is then derived from the name of the pie company. Many college students loved the pies and after they consume the pies, they play with the empty tins by tossing and catching them. Many students found the game very funny and exciting and so it became very popular in many campuses in New England.

1948 – Two of the fans of the ‘pie tins’ made a plastic version and they called it Pluto-platter. It was sold as a toy in the market and it gained a lot of sales since UFOs were also quite popular that time. The persons responsible for creating the plastic version of the Frisbee were Warren Franscioni and Walter Frederick Morrison. However, Franscioni left and it was only Morrison who pursued the project. Many people thought that the Pluto-platter was far better than the pie tins and so they patronized it. Besides, the new toy flew higher than the pie tins and it exhibited speed and accuracy. Soon, Morrison had his toy patented and named it the ‘Morrison Slope’.

1955 – A hula hoop manufacturer, Wham-O, convinced Morrison to sell his design and rights to the toy.

1957 – By this year, Wham-O started to produce the Pluto-platter

1958 – The pie company, Frisbie Baking Company, closed or shut down; in the same year, Morrison was able to collect millions of dollars for his design

1964 – The sales of the Pluto-platter went down and so Wham-O decided to rename it and then re-introduce it to the market as a new toy. The company found out about the story of the Frisbee and so they decided to introduce the toy as a new sports game and called it ‘frisbei-ing’. The players of the game called it Frisbee.

At present, there are already different kinds of Frisbee and Ultimate Frisbee is just one of them. Ultimate Frisbee came from ‘frisbei-ing’.

So you see, Frisbee has undergone a lot of changes and modifications. There is no specific inventor of the game or sport because it was created through the joint efforts of various individuals and companies. The years 1820 to 1964 are quite significant because it is within these years when Frisbee was being conceptualized.

Frisbee is a very exciting game and it helps to know who created or invented it. The game will not exist today if one of the companies or individuals is missing. Thanks to their joint efforts, people today have a healthy and challenging sport to play.

Frisbee: Playing Hot Box

If you still find Ultimate Frisbee a bit slow, why not try playing Hot Box? Hot Box is another type of Frisbee game and you can play it even if you only have four players. For starters, it can be a bit hard to motivate other individuals to join the game especially if they are not familiar with Hot Box. If you wan to encourage your friends to join Hot Box, here are the playing instructions for this game.

  1. Find an open field or simply a wide area where you can make a 6 ft x 6 ft square. The square should be 20 yards apart. Use 8 visible markers to indicate the square like shoes, cones, or backpacks.
  2. Make two teams. You can have a minimum of two players for each team or you can also have more players as long as the teams have equal number of players. Let the teams choose their spot.
  3. Toss a coin to determine which team will have the disc or Frisbee first.
  4. For the offensive team – throw the flying discs to teammates and try to work towards the end zone. Keep in mind that you can’t run with the disc in your hands. Once the disc is passed to you, plant your foot and you can only pivot from your position as long as you’re holding the disc. Pass the disc to other teammates who are in good positions.
  5. For the defensive team – players in the defensive team should try hard to knock off or intercept the flying disc. If you’re successful in intercepting or in knocking off the flying disc to the ground, your team will gain possession of the disc.
  6. On offense - one of the teammates should be positioned on the end zone and that player should be able to catch the disc; that way, your team will still hold the disc.
  7. On defense – players are not allowed to stand more than two seconds inside their own box. Defense should be carried out from outside of the box. There are no exterior boundaries when it comes to hot box so you need to have a good defense strategy.
  8. Before the game starts, the teams should agree on the ‘points’. For example, the first team to get 5 points will win the game or the points could be more than that. The teams should agree with only a specific number of points.

There are times when the game becomes too slow and so the players incorporate additional rules. For instance, players should only be allowed to hold the disc in 10 seconds; if they are unable to pass the disc within that time, the possession of the disc changes.

Break-aways are also excellent when it comes to scoring in Hot Box. If one your teammates can throw the disc with accuracy, you can do this stunt but the catcher should be ready in order to make a point. Defenders should not be too close to the thrower; they should maintain a distance of 2 ft and they are also not allowed to grab, hit, or push the offense.

Hot Box is an exhausting game but its fun. Don’t forget to have drinking water with you because after the game, you will surely find yourself dehydrated. Have a great time playing with friends with this exciting game.

Ultimate Frisbee Terminology

Games have different terminologies being used during the game. Before you start playing any game, you should try to research about the terminologies used so that when you’re already on the playing field, you will not stand there with your mouth wide open (just because you can’t understand what the other players are talking about). This is also true with ultimate Frisbee. So what are the terminologies used in Ultimate Frisbee? Read on to find out.

Players of Ultimate Frisbee should not play without adequate knowledge about the game. There are lots of information resources online about this popular Frisbee game. There are different kinds of Frisbee games aside from Ultimate Frisbee like Dodge Frisbee, Friskee, Flutterguts, Guts Frisbee and many others. Each of the games have their own terminologies and it’s quite easy to mix them up. You have to familiarize yourself with the different terminologies to avoid any confusion.

Eight of the most-used terms in Ultimate Frisbee are the following:

1. Backhand – this will depend if the player is right handed or left handed; right handed players display backhand by throwing the flying disc from the body’s left side while the left handed individuals throw from the body’s right side.

2. Cut – this is done by making a quick attempt to change direction of movement to keep away from the defender

3. Flow – this refers to a series of well-timed passes made through cuts

4. Dump – this is done when a player is under pressure and he or she makes a quick short pass.

5. Forehand – right handed players execute forehand by throwing the disc from the body’s right side; left handed players throw the disc from the body’s left side.

6. Hammer – this refers to the overhead throw that is executed quite high

7. Pull – this refers to the throw made once the game begins; this throw initiates play

8. Swing – this refers to the lateral pass made across the playing field

There are still other terms used in Ultimate Frisbee and you have to learn them all. If you try to compare this Frisbee game with other sports games, ultimate Frisbee is different because there are no referees or arbitrators. Players settle their own disputes and they make the call for foul and other violations. Because of this, players should know about the game’s rules or regulations, violations, and of course, the terminology. That way, you can easily make a call or you can identify the moves of the other players without much problem.

Sometimes disputes arise because players can’t understand each others. If they know the terminologies and language used in Ultimate Frisbee, the players can avoid misunderstandings. It’s really important to speak the same language in order for players to understand one another. Ultimate Frisbee is not new and it has been around for many years now.

However, its popularity increased in the past couple of years. More and more individuals are already into Frisbee games and since Frisbee has different types of games, it is vital for every game to have its own identity, separate from the other Frisbee games. One way to do that is to have certain terminologies that are used specifically for that kind of game.

Play Ultimate Frisbee games and make sure you know the terminologies used, as well as the rules of the game. You will need those things if you want to be an effective player.

History of Frisbee

People always remember their firsts – first word spoken, first step, tooth, love, and many other firsts. This is also true with the many inventions of man. If you’re into Frisbee, then you’re probably wondering about its history. Who invented Frisbee? When was it first played and by whom?

The Frisbee that many people know today was not exactly the same Frisbee that was thrown and played years ago. The design is incredibly ingenius and it started not as a plastic toy. Back then, it was believed that students played Frisbee using pie tins. The design of the Frisbee evolved through the years until it finally settled with the plastic design.

Back then, Frisbee has a different spelling but it was pronounced the same way. It was spelled Frisbie and it was derived from a company name and a person’s name. The Frisbie Baking Company was a very popular pie-producing company which supplied to most of the school and university campuses in New England. The pie company operated from 1871 to 1958 and the pies were put in pie tins with the name of the company at the bottom of the tin.

Since the students loved their pies, many were eating it and so they were left with lots of pie tins. The students were able to come up with a game they called ‘frisbie-ing’ and the pie tins were in turn called ‘frisbie’. In one of the campuses, there was also a student named Elihu Frisbie which played with tray collections (using it like Frisbee) on the school grounds. Some say that Frisbee was already coined from his surname.

Walter Frederick Morrison made a new version of the pie tins and made a plastic Frisbee but he did not call it by the name coined by the college students. Instead, he called it Pluto-platter because during that time, UFOs were very popular and intriguing. Indeed, his Pluto-platter was a sure hit and many people patronized it. Later on, he had it patented by the name Morrison Slope.

The Pluto-platter became extremely popular as a toy and Wham-O took an interest in it. They convinced Morrison to sell his rights and after that, the company produced the toy and called it by the same name. The sales declined after several years and the company wanted to re-introduce it to the market. They conducted thorough research about the toy until they finally came to know that it was originally called Frisbee.

When they finally decided to re-introduce Pluto-platter, they called it Frisbie and it was popularized as a sports or recreational game. They called the game ‘frisbei-ing’ but at present, it is already called ultimate Frisbee. Wham-O was also the one who changed ‘frisbie’ to Frisbee so that they can avoid possible lawsuits or any legality in the future.

If you try to analyze it, there is no specific date or a certain inventor. The years mentioned and the companies and individuals involved are all part of the sport’s improvement. The history tells so much about the Frisbee and you will learn a lot from it. You can’t disregard any of the companies or individuals involved in the Frisbee evolution because if one of them is missing, Frisbee will not exist today.

In order to better understand Frisbee, you must first know about its history. Now that you know its colorful history, you will surely enjoy playing it with your friends.

The Physics behind Frisbee

Have you ever wondered how the Frisbee flies? The answer is very simple – it’s all about Physics. The forward flight of the Frisbee is due to the air that pushes at the leading edge of the disc. The air stays over and under the flying disc.

Since the edge of the disc is tipped up, some of the air is deflected downward and when it pushes downward, the air is again pushed over the disc. The force which allows the Frisbee to fly on air is known as aerodynamic lift. You can compare the flow of the air to the flow of fluids. The air tends to follow curve surfaces. The design of the Frisbee was carefully thought. Because of the bend on the Frisbee, air is easily sucked upwards and downwards thereby making the disc stay afloat despite of the force of gravity. Another good way to describe a Frisbee on flight is the so called ‘Bernoulli Effect’.

As a Frisbee player, you must be aware that you can’t make a Frisbee fly when it is upside-down. The disc’s rotation is also crucial. For instance, if a player throws the Frisbee upright, it will result to a poor flight. The Frisbee will simply flutter and tumble like that of a falling leaf; this is because the aerodynamic force is not perfectly centered. Because of the Frisbee’s angular momentum, it can stay on a certain orientation. The flight of the disc is usually affected by the aerodynamic twists and torques.

Because of the disc’s ingenious design, the maximum lift is perfectly placed at the toy’s middle. The angular momentum of the disc is also maximized because of its thicker edges. The disc also has top ridges and it is not for any design purpose. The ridges introduce microscopic air turbulence above the disc’s label. Because of the turbulence, the disc can fly farther and longer on air.

A lot of people are confused with the physics behind the Frisbee and so they would just rather toss and catch a Frisbee rather than think about how the toy works. It’s really quite amazing that the Frisbee started as amnempty pie tin and at present, it’s flight can only be explained by physics.

If someone asks you how the disc flies, you already have an idea. If you still can’t get the concept of aerodynamics, you can simply answer that the Frisbee flies because of its ingenious and complex design; that way, you won’t have to go down the details. Still, the aerodynamic concept and the Bernoulli Effect are not really difficult to understand. If you take time to read and comprehend, you will immediately understand how the toy works.

From just a simple toy, the Frisbee is now being played as a sport. In fact, there are many types of Frisbee games today which include Ultimate Frisbee, Flutter Guts, Friskee, Dodge Frisbee, Disc Golf, and a lot more. Because of the disc’s ingenious design, it has evolved from being a simple toy to very exciting sports.

Now that you know physics behind the flight of a Frisbee, you will no longer wonder how it is able to withstand the gravity and stay on the air for a long period. Get your very own Frisbee now and play together with friends and even other family members. You can play in your own yard or even at the park.

Frisbee Golf

One of the best team building activities that you can get involved with is Frisbee Golf. This game can be played by children and adults since it is a fun off-beat sport like the hacky sack and the broomball.

Frisbee Golf is also called disc golf. The goal of individual players is to throw the flying disc or flying saucer to a target or basket. Frisbee Golf is similar to traditional golf and the terminology and rules are almost the same. A disc golf player can carry many discs because there are no limitations. In Frisbee golf, there are no ‘hazards’ as compared to the traditional golf. The golfers should have a support point on the golf surface before they can make another throw if the previous shot is inbounds. Foot support is the most commonly used supporting point and you should learn how to do it properly.

Before, hippies and radical college students were the only ones who are into Frisbee golf but now, it’s quite different. In fact, many Princeton students are already playing this game since the rules are quite easy to understand and learn. You can’t play Frisbee golf in an ordinary golf course. It should be played on a special Frisbee golf course. You can throw the Frisbee anyway you like because the rules don’t have any specifications.

As compared to regular flying discs, Frisbee golf discs fly farther. It is very enjoyable to play this kind of golf activity and many youths are already into such sport. Since this is a team sport, players will learn how to play as a team.

Aside from being similar to traditional golf rules, Frisbee golf is also similar to international handball. The sport is fast-moving and so it is suitable for young individuals. However, if older adults want to play the game, they can do so especially if the other players are in the same age range or pysical fitness. At present, many colleges already have Frisbee golf clubs or teams for males and females.

Frisbee golf attacks vary, depending on the player but there are generally 2 ways to do it. One way is to aim the disc at the opponent’s court and you have to ensure that it lands inbounds. The other attack is by throwing the disc in such a way that two opposing players touch it to cause a violation called ‘double’.

It is up to the player whether he will run or not when throwing the disc golf. If you want the disc golf to spin into the air, you need to flick your wrist when throwing the Frisbee. most professional Frisbee golf players can only finish the game by hitting the target using the Frisbee.

Frisbee golf or disc golf is an exciting way to spend your free hours together with friends and other Frisbee golf enthusiasts. The Frisbee golf courses are close to nature and you will also be able to get a good exercise. Anyone can participate in Frisbee golf as long as you can handle a physically exhausting game. Whether you’re a competitive person or not, you can also play this fun game; Frisbee golf is definitely gaining much popularity these days. So why not join the others?

If you want to play as a team, choose Frisbee golf. This is a better way to spend your free hours with friends and other players.
